In the heart of the City of Light, just a half-hour walk from the hotel, lies a mythical street, once home to great writers and a setting for iconic films. Rue Mouffetard, or "La Mouffe" as locals call it, has stood the test of time while preserving its charm and authenticity. Let’s embark on a journey to discover this historic and emblematic street in the 5th arrondissement of Paris.
A street steeped in history
Rue Mouffetard is one of the oldest streets in Paris, originally built by the Romans about 2,000 years ago. It extended their Cardo (now Rue St-Jacques) and formed part of the southern road connecting Lutetia (ancient Paris) to Italy. The street descended the southern slope of Mons Lucotitius (modern-day Montagne Sainte-Geneviève) and passed through the small village of Bourg Saint-Médard at the foot of the hill.
The Pont aux Tripes crossing
The Pont aux Tripes was a bridge that once crossed the Bièvre near the current roundabout by St-Médard Church. Rue Mouffetard extended beyond the bridge toward the current Porte d'Italie, connecting with the old southern route. This once-trendy village made Rue Mouffetard the main street of Bourg St-Médard.
Workshops and the Gobelins
The small village was initially inhabited by workers and winemakers cultivating the vineyards on the sunny slopes of Mons Lucotitius. However, the establishment of the Gobelins workshops in the 14th century changed the area, making it less appealing due to waste and unpleasant odors. These odors, known as moffettes, inspired the street's name: Rue des Moffettes became Rue Mouffetard.
A lively and bustling street
Today, Rue Mouffetard is a vibrant hub in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. As you stroll down this street, you’ll find numerous shops, restaurants, cafés, and bars, making it a favorite spot for Parisians and travelers seeking authenticity.
The Rue Mouffetard market
The lower part of Rue Mouffetard is famous for its daily farmers' market, filled with colors and atmosphere. Stalls overflow with fresh produce, from fruits and vegetables to cheeses and charcuterie. A true feast for the eyes and taste buds! The market is the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the warm neighborhood vibe and enjoy local flavors.

Friendly establishments
The upper part of Rue Mouffetard, near Place de la Contrescarpe, is lined with a variety of restaurants, cafés, and bars that come alive in the evenings and on weekends. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner in a cozy restaurant or a drink with friends in a trendy bar, you’ll find what you’re looking for on La Mouffe.
Architectural heritage
Beyond its festive atmosphere and shops, Rue Mouffetard also boasts remarkable architectural heritage. Look up to discover historic buildings and fascinating architectural details.
Historical landmarks
Several houses on Rue Mouffetard are classified as historical monuments. Among them is the Fontaine du Pot au Fer, built in 1624 and listed as a historical monument in 1925, and Le Vieux Chêne at No. 69, which served as a revolutionary committee headquarters in 1848. These buildings reflect the rich history and culture of the street.
Picturesque facades
While strolling down Rue Mouffetard, take the time to admire the facades of the houses, which often hold delightful surprises. For instance, the facade at No. 134, directly opposite St-Médard Church, is entirely painted with animal scenes, a nod to the butcher shop on the ground floor. A playful tribute to the location's history and the neighborhood's character.
