Hunting, Digging and Finding the Rare Gem
Start your visit to the north of the capital at the Saint-Ouen Flea Market. Head to the Porte-de-Clignancourt metro station and explore (on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) the world’s largest antiques market! Wander from stand to stand, from classic antiques to second-hand clothing, including industrial-style furniture or much more unusual items, such as old tools or archaeological pieces. If you want to optimize your time, don’t hesitate to get a professional guide specializing in art and antique purchases.
Then take the metro to the Barbès-Rochechouart station. Just across, you’ll find one of Paris’s most famous stores: Tati. You’ll easily spot this large department store with its pink and white gingham logo. But most of all, you'll notice the frenzy that seems to have overtaken the customers who are rummaging through the clothing, shoes, and home linen, even spilling out onto the sidewalk… A must-visit for bargain hunters.
When you leave Tati, you’ll discover the Goutte d’Or: one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan districts of the capital, named after the color of the white wine its vineyards once produced. Explore its bazaars, shops selling African fabrics and Maghrebian music. Don’t forget to visit the Lavoir Moderne Parisien, a cultural and popular place that calls itself a “multicultural laboratory,” where you can enjoy concerts and theater.
Let’s continue our stroll toward Montmartre, one of the most visited neighborhoods in the capital. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic visit to Paris, from where you’ll overlook the city.
Then head up Boulevard Barbès-Rochechouart towards the Montmartre hill, following the white Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur. On your right, take the rue Seveste, which will lead you to the Marché Saint-Pierre: the go-to place for fabric lovers. Five floors filled with every color and material imaginable!
Just a stone’s throw from the market, you’ll find the Halle Saint Pierre. This beautiful, bright hall, whose architecture resembles that of Baltard, is home to an exhibition space for raw art – celebrating the most unexpected forms of contemporary creation – as well as a bookstore and a café, where you can relax between exhibits.
